The Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers – the oldest optical body in the world, founded nearly 400 years ago – celebrated excellence this week with an awards ceremony for those who have invested time in optical training.

The London ceremony took place at Apothecaries’ Hall, the longstanding home of the Spectacle Makers.  Laboratory manager Daniel Hunter-Pike [pictured], from Gravesend in Kent, was awarded the coveted Wiseman Memorial Prize* for achieving the highest marks of the year in the practical exam of the challenging SMC Tech Level 4 qualification.

This training, and resultant exam, tests the ability to take a prescription and interpet this into the very best spectacle lens for optimum vision.  He was praised for his hard work and dedication.

Daniel, who has worked in optical manufacturing for 27 years said it was quite a commitment but that he is delighted to have achieved such success

“The training has helped a great deal with my daily work and given me extra confidence.  I now know why something works, rather than just that it does.  I understand the principles of all the lenses, and I am now passing on that knowledge to all the others in the lab.”

*This award is made annually to commemorate the highly respected optical manufacturing pioneer of the C20th, Max Wiseman.
